The exhibition, “Larry Gains: Leicester’s Forgotten Champion,” explores the extraordinary life and legacy of Larry Gains, the Canadian-born heavyweight boxer who made Leicester his home in the early 1930s. Larry fought at some of Leicester’s best-known sporting venues, including Granby Halls and Welford Road Stadium, home of Leicester Tigers.
Visitors will have the opportunity to see a 100-year-old amateur boxing trophy, boxing gloves worn by Larry during the Second World War, and many other unique items connected to his remarkable life and career.
There will also be an opportunity to meet Larry Gains’ great-grandsons, Michael Gains and Paul Simmons, who are helping to preserve and share his story through The Gains Heritage Foundation.
The exhibition takes place at the African Caribbean Centre, Leicester, on Saturday 29 August, from 9:00am–3:00pm, and entry is free.
