The Statue
A statue of Larry Gains will honour his legacy, recognise his contributions to Leicester, and celebrate his life and role as a trailblazer in the world of boxing. More than a tribute to his sporting achievements. The statue also acknowledges his contributions to society, as a symbol of resilience, dignity, and progress in the face of adversity. It will stand as a powerful symbol of unity, pride, and diversity in Leicester.
The statue will reflect the cultural and historical significance of Larry Gains’s life, not only within the city, but across the shared heritage of Canada and the UK. Where his story continues to resonate, educate, and inspire.
The Sculptor
The statue of Larry Gains will be created by Steve Winterburn, a world-renowned sculptor with a deep passion for Larry’s story. Steve and his family are honoured to take on this commission and bring a wealth of experience, creativity, and heart to the project.
Steve has worked with many prestigious names in the fine art world, including Halcyon Gallery, Carrs Silver, Monaco Fine Arts, Hickmet Fine Arts, Sotheby’s, Christie’s, LAPADA, and BADA. His expertise extends beyond bronze, he and his family have mastered working with precious metals such as silver and gold, earning their own British Hallmark in the process.
In Leicester, Steve is already known for the Tiger Monument, which symbolises the historic connection between the Leicester Tigers and the Military Tiger Regiment.
Sports fans may also recognise his flagship bronze at Wembley Stadium, commissioned by the charity Rugby League Cares. This powerful sculpture features five legends of Rugby League and has become a landmark in its own right.
We are truly honoured to have the Winterburn family, all of whom are gifted artists, bringing Larry Gains’s legacy to life through this important work.
Statue Design
The statue of Larry Gains will depict him dressed to the nines in a sharp, elegant suit immaculately presented, just as he was in life. Larry was the true embodiment of a gentleman, and this design captures that spirit with timeless grace.
While a traditional boxing pose may have been the obvious choice, both the family and the design team agreed that this artistic direction offers deeper resonance. It invites conversation, sparks curiosity, and highlights not just the athlete, but the man behind the gloves.
The statue will be cast in bronze and feature a distinctive yet powerful detail, boxing gloves placed at the base. Symbolising Larry in his prime and honouring his legendary career in the ring.
The monument will stand approximately 12 feet in height, comprising an 8-foot bronze statue of Larry Gains mounted atop a 4-foot base, establishing a striking and dignified presence within its surroundings. The base will feature the engraved names of former Midlands boxers, including some fighters from the bare-knuckle era alongside influential trainers and promoters. Serving as a lasting tribute to generations who have shaped the region’s proud boxing heritage.
We remain open to discussions and suggestions from Leicester City Council regarding the most fitting and impactful location for the statue.
