Larry Gains was born on Sumach Street in Toronto’s Cabbagetown neighbourhood on December 12, 1900. At age 12, he met Jack Johnson, the first Black world heavyweight boxing champion, who inspired his own boxing journey.

Yes! His autobiography, The Impossible Dream, was published in 1976. In it, he shares his journey from growing up in Toronto, to becoming one of the most respected boxers of his time.
