Welcome to the Official Campaign Celebrating Lawrence Samuel “Larry” Gains
Larry Gains was a pioneering Canadian-British heavyweight boxer and a true champion both in and out of the ring. He proudly served in the British Army from 1939 to 1945, showing courage and dedication beyond the sport.
He made Leicester his beloved second home, creating many cherished memories in the city that embraced him. This campaign seeks to honour his remarkable legacy with a permanent public statue.
More than an athlete, Larry was a true gentleman, admired not just for his achievements in boxing, but for his character, kindness and the deep respect he earned across communities.
He was a valued part of Leicester’s rich history, but his story reaches far beyond, touching and inspiring communities across the UK, Canada, and beyond.
His legacy is rooted in shared Canadian and British heritage. A courageous figure who overcame racial and social barriers, and whose life continues to inspire through its message of perseverance, dignity, and excellence.
This campaign goes beyond celebrating one remarkable individual. It also honours the rich boxing heritage of the Midlands, recognising former boxers, including some fighters from the bare-knuckle era as well as influential trainers and promoters. Their names will be engraved on the base of the statue as a lasting tribute to their invaluable contribution to the sport.
